PCR #56 - X-Men: Apocalypse Review!

June 23rd, 2016

In this episode, Travis and (Professor) Xavier are back to review X-Men: Apocalypse!  This does contain SPOILERS so if you haven’t seen it yet, fair warning!  We take a look at how this movie pulls from the source material (sorta), and if it works on the cinematic side of things.  This movie brought in a slew of new/returning characters such as Psylocke, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, and of course Apocalypse himself.  Is the character of Apocalypse a thankless role?  Why were people laughing?  Just what are his powers and how does he get them?  As cool as the Wolverine scene was, something took us out of the moment.  Everyone seemed to love Quicksilver again, but how could he have been better?  What did they rip-off from a DC TV show?  This was an interesting movie, so we had lots to talk about!  Check it out and enjoy!

PCR #55 - Marvel v DC: Dawn of War

June 6th, 2016

In this episode, Travis & X give their take on the two big comic book films of 2016 that’s pitting hero against hero and see which one is better, DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War! (Beware of SPOILERS!)
For BvS, they hit on all the highs & lows of the film such as Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor (ugh!), mothers named Martha, a Justice League setup with a nightmare sequence and superhero cameos, and of course the ending of the film.

For Civil War, they obviously talk about the much anticipated Marvel Studios debut of Spider-Man!  They also cover other hits of the film like Black Panther’s debut, Ant-Man’s big surprise, making Hawkeye purposeful, Vision & Scarlet Witch, and of course all the action scenes.  Travis had some reservations about the villain, but X makes some sense out of it for him.

Whose side are you on?  Team Cap or Team Tony?  Team DC or Team Marvel?  Tell us what you thought of the films!  Visit us on our Facebook page at facebook.com/popculturerewind, send us a tweet @popculturerwnd, or shoot us an email at [email protected]!  Catch up on all of our past episodes at popculturerewind.com, or by subscribing to us on iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play Music!

PCR #54 - Alien Saga Spotlight Part 4: ProMEHtheus

May 17th, 2016

In this episode, we conclude our spotlight on the Alien movie franchise by covering the 2012 film, Prometheus.  In what was supposed to be a quasi-not-so-much-prequel to Alien, Ridley Scott takes us back to the world of space exploration, evil corporations, and alien lifeforms that like to kill.  We break down what worked and what didn’t work, the cast and characters involved, and what the point of the movie is all about, or at least we try.  After that, Xavier gives a good breakdown of the original script and how much different (better) it was than what we got.  Travis gives a rundown of how well all the Alien films did at the box office, and then read out a few of our listener’s favorite Alien films.  This is an awesome finale to our spotlight, so check it out and enjoy!

PCR #48 - The Clone Wars

March 14th, 2016

In this special “lost” episode, Travis & Xavier take a look at an interesting trend in Hollywood that’s happened throughout the years, the “twin movies”, or as they like to call them, “clone movies”.  You ever see that one movie about the asteroid that’s about to collide with Earth?  Or what about the one about talking ants?  How about the one about an erupting volcano?  Then there was that one where the guy has to save the president.  These are just a few examples of what we like to call…the clone wars!

PCR #47 - The Curse of the Three’s

February 22nd, 2016

In this episode, Travis & Xavier take a look at some of the worst movie threequels of all time.  A threequel is a second sequel to a movie, or a continuation, or the third part to a franchise.  Unfortunately, Hollywood always seems to drop the ball on what made the previous two films successful.  Whether the lead actor wasn't signed on for a third film, or the budget was cut back, or the writers and/or director don't come back (unless it's Michael Bay, then you can't get rid of him), something always seems to happen which affects the overall quality of the threequel, or as we like to say....the curse of the three!

PCR #42 - The Nostalgia Strikes Back

December 23rd, 2015

A short time ago, in a recording room far, far away.....

Travis & Xavier are back as they look back at the original trilogy of the Star Wars universe!  They start off by remembering what the franchise means to them, their first memories, how it's impacted their lives as kids and as adults.  They then break down the original trilogy of A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.  They take a look at the characters, cast, settings, music, all while trying to not let the "Special Editions" get in the way of the classics.  They take a look at some good fan theories, the Star Wars Vs Star Trek fandoms, and try to figure out how everyone understands alien languages.  Who really played Darth Vader?  Do Droids have souls?  How awkward was it when Luke & Leia kissed?  What all does Vader choke?  They also rip into the prequels and try to find any redeeming qualities from them (spoilers: they don't find any).  Also, listen as Xavier starts to break down into an emotional mess as he recollects the most heartbreaking death in the entire series.  If you're a Star Wars fan, you definitely don't want to miss this one!  May the Force be with you!
